About Hao Crafts
Hao crafts is engaged in making Serpentinite pottery known as Black pottery. The pottery has a rich black texture and is made by crushing serpentinite available in Longpi Village in Ukhrul, Manipur. There is no use of the wheel, the products being shaped by hand. The powder of serpentinite and clay are mixed together and made into dough which is then flattened out on a wooden late and moulded by hand to make a variety of objects. In some case wooden and bamboo poles are also used to shaoe objects. The products are then polished and incised by skilled artisans with the help of bamboo blade. Good polishing is crucial to the process as it ensures that the object does not crack during firing. The products are fired in the kiln for 4 - 5 hours at about 900 degrees centigrade. The products are removed from the kiln when the temperature is still high, and then covered with leaves known as chilon-na for making black. The products then accented with beautiful cane work. Thin cane strips are neatly woven through the incisions by skilled basketry artists belonging to Tangkhul, Maring and Tarao tribes of Manipur.
